These days, the concept of self care has become popularized more than ever as influencers and content creators aim to spread mental health awareness to their audiences. At times, it can become overwhelming to get started- from Korean skin care routines, sacred baths, a plethora of crystals, healing retreats, and plant-based alkaline diets- it’s clear that self-care comes with a price. With this year’s fluctuating job market and economy, I found my self-care practice teetering as my stress levels rose. Which is why developing a consistent self care practice is vital for maintaining wellness as a preventative measure rather than a means for damage control. With my finances being different, I had to look into incorporating practical self-care on a budget.

Something I learned in undergrad at VCU was the concept of the 3 pillars of wellness which is diet, sleep, and exercise. Getting vital sleep is completely free, and I learned to not feel guilty for honoring my body’s need for rest & recovery. Often, with looming anxiety & stressors, worrying thoughts can keep us up at night- preventing the much-needed restoration our body needs for proper physical & neurological functioning.

Another way to honor our bodies is through the foods we consume. Science shows that our gut and brain are directly connected and our diet can literally impact our mental wellbeing. When I operated on survival mode, I used coupons for fast food restaurants offering free meals, which were often high in calories/fat, and low in nutritional value. What I found is that raw vegetables and fruits are affordable on a low budget and much better for my body. As Hippocrates once said, “Let thy food be thy medicine,” and our Earth grows nutritious food designed to heal our bodies. Non-profit organizations like RVA Community Fridges and the Ram pantry also offer free food & produce for those in need.

Lastly- exercise is the best way to move our body, keep our blood flowing and heart pumping oxygen to vital organs. It’s a natural dopamine and serotonin release which can be done at home or in nature for those who may not have the budget for a gym membership or access to professional equipment. These practical routines have helped keep me afloat in even the most difficult times and I hope it helps someone else who’s lost in this whirlwind of self-care.
