A few weeks back on July 20, I took it upon myself to get involved with the art community by attending my friend’s private art show in an abandoned school at an undisclosed location. The artist, whose Instagram handle is @jpg.taj is an incredibly talented painter and graffiti artist I have known for the past couple of years. I was featured in a video project for one of his art shows in 2022, so it was only right for me to check out his new work. Upon entering the building, I was fascinated by the detailed artistry that filled the school walls, hallways, and classrooms. A sense of nostalgia washed over me along with the feeling of inclusivity for being on the invite-only list. There, I saw some new & familiar faces, and it was therapeutic for me to socialize with others after a long period of isolation, stillness, and silence. Together we took part in admiring the vibrant artwork, deciphering the meaning, “tagging” the old school walls, and reflecting on what it might’ve been like in the past. Overall, I enjoyed my experience and was inspired by Taj’s initiative to turn a desolate, unoccupied building into an artistic landscape where creatives can come together and collaborate in a safe, private space. I hope to one day return and shoot a music video here for my song, “Nostalgia”!
